Pink Ribbon Success

bodyguards500px

The Pink Ribbon Foundation is a grant making trust – an umbrella charity which provides financial support for UK breast cancer charities, which in turn supports breast cancer sufferers and their carers.  The financial support from the foundation also helps to fund cancer research, detection and treatment. The foundation supports many smaller charities operating on a shoe-string budget at grassroot level.

Karen Phillips, Group Marketing Manager of Bodyguards said, “ I am absolutely thrilled that as a company we are working with the Pink Ribbon Foundation. Many staff at Bodyguards have been affected by breast cancer either themselves personally or their friends or family.  The Pink Ribbon Foundation is a charity with which we all feel a strong connection.  We launched our Pink Ribbon campaign last September and we really want people to know what we are doing to support this excellent charity.  A proportion of every sale of the Pink latex and Nitrile gloves is donated directly to the foundation.  As a British company with a large female customer base we wanted to produce a quality product that would raise awareness and would also raise funds for such a worthwhile cause as the Pink Ribbon Foundation.”

Errol MacBean, Trustee of the Pink Ribbon Foundation added, “we wish to express our thanks to Bodyguards for the generous donation. The Pink Ribbon Foundation is a grant making trust which funds projects and provides financial support to UK charities which helps to relieve the needs of those affected by breast cancer, the Foundation invites charities concerned with breast cancer to apply for grants from the money raised. Operating in this way allows for help to charities both large and small.  With these donations from wonderfully generous organisations such as Bodyguards some of the smaller organisations who rely so heavily on these grants will be able to continue their good work.”
Bodyguards are supporting the Pink Ribbon Foundation with their Bodyguards pink range of latex and nitrile powder free disposable gloves.  For every box of 100 disposable gloves sold, 15p will be donated to the  Pink Ribbon Foundation, for every bag of 10 gloves sold 10p will be donated to the charity.  The new Bodyguards gloves are ideal for many everyday tasks.

Karen Phillips Group Marketing Manager for Bodyguards is photographed presenting the cheque for £7000 to Angie Brignell and Errol MacBean Trustees of the Pink Ribbon Foundation. The money was raised from the sales of a range of Pink Disposable gloves.

PPE PRODUCTS THAT CAN HELP REDUCE THE RISK OF SWINE FLU

How can the general public help to reduce their risks against Swine flu?

We supply a range of PPE equipment to help reduce the risk of Swine Flu.

Face Masks/Respirators
If used correctly, masks and respirators may indeed reduce the risk of contracting and spreading swine flu.  Face masks and respirators should be worn once, disposed of and a new one used according to the World Health Organisation.

Loose fitting face masks are designed to help stop droplets from spreading from the person wearing the mask and to protect the wearer’s mouth and nose from splashes. Face masks are not created to protect the wearer from breathing in very small particles. Respirators are made for just that. Respirators are designed to protect the wearer from breathing in small particles and are renowned  for their filtering ability and fit snugly on the face so that air is breathed through the filter material.  Respirators work best if they are fitted specifically to the person wearing the mask.

Face masks and respirators are most useful for people who are in crowded settings  and in close contact with an infected person.  They are ideal for use on public transport and in crowds.  They will help to protect the mouth and nose from germs and reduce the likelihood of coughing or sneezing on other people.

Health experts note that face masks and respirators should be used along with other precautions such as frequent hand-washing, cleaning surfaces with disinfection wipes and cleaning hands with an alcohol based hand sanitiser.

Disinfection Wipes
Germs can be spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth. Droplets from a cough or sneeze of an infected person move through the air. Germs can be spread when a person touches respiratory droplets from another person on a surface like a desk and then touches their own eyes, mouth or nose before washing their hands.  Viruses and bacteria can live 2 hours or longer on work surfaces like cafeteria tables,  doorknobs and desks.  Wipe these surfaces down on a regular basis with disinfection wipes, these will help you reduce the chance of getting contaminated from these common surfaces.

Hand Hygiene
Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. Wash with soap and water and for added protection clean with an alcohol-based hand cleaner. We recommend that when you wash your hands with soap and warm water you wash for 15 - 20 seconds. When soap and water are not available, and for frequent hand cleansing throughout the day we recommend the use of an alcohol-based disposable hand wipe or gel sanitiser.  If using gel, rub your hands until the gel is dry. Gel does not need water to work; the alcohol in it kills the germs on your hands.

As an added barrier, disposable gloves can also be used to safeguard you against the possible spread of infection.

SWINE FLU - WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW & SIMPLE STEPS FOR PREVENTION

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

New cases of the deadly swine flu virus have been confirmed worldwide. The World Health Organization has warned that swine flu cannot be contained and the risk of a pandemic is “significant”.

Swine flu is a respiratory disease thought to spread through coughing and sneezing. Symptoms mimic those of seasonal flu - sore throat, coughing and fever.

If you have these symptoms phone your GP or NHS Direct. Avoid contact with other people as much as possible, cover your nose and mouth when coughing and wash hands frequently. Treatment is available in the form of anti-virals.  The anti- virals are not a cure but evidence shows that they lessen the symptoms and shorten the illness.

The health service has responded by launching the first stage of its contingency plan. Patients are being advised to phone their GPs or NHS Direct - NHS 24 in Scotland - if they are concerned they may have swine flu instead of turning up to health centres in person to minimise the potential spread of the virus.

“We need everyone to make sure they are ready. We are not at the pandemic stage yet, but we are on alert and calls are coming in.”
Dr Maureen Baker, of the Royal College of GPs

The UN’s health agency, the World Health Organisation said the flu is being spread by human-to-human transmission. Work is under way to produce a vaccine and it would typically be five to six months before it became commercially available.

“Our aim is to provide the UK Health Services with sufficient PPE equipment to manage the onset of an A1 pandemic and thereby manage risks to health workers, patients and the general public.”

SIMPLE STEPS FOR PREVENTION
There are simple steps that everyone can take to help prevent catching colds and flu based on good respiratory and hand hygiene.

Always use a tissue to catch your sneezes, throw away used tissues in which germs can linger and regularly wash your hands.

Most importantly, if you have come back from Mexico or one of the affected countries and have flu-like symptoms, stay at home and call your GP or NHS Direct.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION - SWINE FLU

Swine Flu is a respiratory disease that infects pigs. It is caused by an influenza virus (Influenza Type A and carries the designation H1N1). According to the U.S Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the virus contains DNA from avian, swine and human viruses, including elements from European and Asian swine viruses. It does not normally infect humans, but this occasionally does occur.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) says the new swine flu virus is spread from person to person in the same way as ordinary colds and flu. The virus is spread through the droplets that come out of the nose or mouth when someone coughs or sneezes. If someone coughs or sneezes and they do not cover their mouth and nose, those droplets can spread about one metre (3ft). If you are very close to that person you might breathe in the droplets. If someone coughs or sneezes into their hand, those droplets and the virus within them are easily transferred to surfaces that the person touches such as door handles and hand rails. If you touch these surfaces and touch your face, the virus can enter your system, and you can become infected.

The flu virus can live on a hard surface for up to 24 hours and on a soft surface for around 4 hours.

It is likely that the virus originated in pigs. The Mexican Government and the World Health Organisation have ruled out any risk of infection from eating pork.

Advice to the Public:

The advice from the NHS is that preventing the spread of germs is the single most effective way to slow the spread of diseases like pandemic flu. You can protect yourself and your family by ensuring everyone washes their hands regularly with soap and water, and by cleaning surfaces regularly.

You can prevent a virus spreading to others by:

  • Always carrying tissues.
  • Using tissues to cover your mouth and nose when you cough and sneeze.
  • Binning the tissues as soon as possible.
  • Washing your hands regularly.

CATCH IT. BIN IT. KILL IT.  is a simple way to remember this.

Advice to Healthcare Workers:

This information is taken directly from the NHS Choices web-site.

You can reduce but not eliminate, the risk of catching or spreading swine flu by:

  • Always covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
  • Disposing of dirty tissues promptly and carefully.
  • Maintaining good basic hygiene, for example washing hands frequently with soap and water to reduce the spread of the virus from your hands to face, or to other people.
  • Cleaning hard surfaces, such as door handles frequently using a normal cleaning product.

The wearing and use of Personnel Protection Equipment is recommended to those in contact with suspected or confirmed influenza. This includes:

  • Face masks for general use, where risk is minimal.
  • FFP2/FFP3 respirators for close contact with those suspected or confirmed to have the swine flu virus.
  • Other equipment such as aprons, gowns, examination gloves, disinfectant wipes and gels can be used in accordance with individual trust guidelines

Government guidelines (HPA and NHS) recommend the use of personnel protective equipment for healthcare workers such as masks, respirators, aprons, disinfectant wipes and gels to help reduce the risks surrounding swine influenza.
